The continuous signalling using VTP Joins is crucial, and in fact, it appears to be VTP's weak spot. If the VTP Joins stop being received for whatever reason, the receiving switch will start assuming that the neighboring switch considers all VLANs being inactive, and prunes all VLANs from the trunk. This is what most probably happened in this incident: VTP Pruning was on, and later, one of two interconnected switches was reconfigured from a VTP Server/Client mode to VTP Transparent. As a result, the Transparent switch stopped sending VTP Joins and its neighboring switch pruned off all VLANs from the trunk, thinking that they are all unused.
